PestCalc for Windows

Q.  Why do I need PestCalc for Windows?

If you are confident of your pesticide rate calculation, then you DON'T need it. If you are not, then you DO need it. Here are some of the reasons why you need to follow pesticide labels and do accurate calculations of your application rates:

  • The recommended rate is the proven, documented, and well-researched usage rate of the pesticide by the manufacturer and has been certified to be the most effective against specific target pests, the least harmful to the target crops, with the minimum adverse effect on the environment in the long run.

  • Applying pesticide under or in excess of the recommended rate results to either marginal/inadequate control of target pests or undesirable injury to both target crops and beneficial insects and other organisms. The former leads to the development of pesticide resistance while the latter adversely affects yield and quality of harvested product. Excessive application also leads to unpredictable accumulation of runoff pesticides which impacts not only the environment but also the performance of succeeding crops and survival of beneficial organisms.

  • Using the correct rate gives you the most bang for every dollar you spent on pest control and therefore is an important element that affects the bottom line of your business.

  • It is the law. Application using the recommended rates is mandated by both federal and state laws.

Q.  On installation and after double-clicking SetupPetcalc.exe, the system appeared to freeze and won't do anything. What's happening?
The most likely cause is your computer's anti-virus software. Since the file you clicked is an executable file, your anti-virus sees it as a threat to your system so it prevented it from running. The best thing to do is temporarily disable your anti-virus software, install PestCalc for Windows, and then enable your anti-virus. Your anti-virus manual or web site should have the information on how to temporarily suspend the software otherwise consult a computer technician on how to do it.

Q.  I only got me an old Windows XP computer, would PestCalc for Windows run on it?
PestCalc for Windows was designed to run not only under Windows XP® but also on machines with Windows Vista® and Windows 7® operating systems. Both 32- and 64-bit systems are supported.

Q.  Pesticide calculation procedures and formula are all over the Web, why would I need PestCalc?

ALL web sites are prone to disconnection for whatever reason and this web site is no exception. If you cannot connect to a reference web site then you would be unable to do all those step-by-step calculations contained in it. On the other hand, when you licensed and installed a copy of PestCalc for Windows, it would always be in your computer ready to be invoked at anytime or anywhere (if you got it loaded in a laptop). It's always there when you need it even when your Internet connection is down!

Q.  How does PestCalc for Windows handle metric units?

PestCalc for Windows has a built-in unit conversion routine. If you entered an English unit (i.e., acre) as an input to a calculation and clicked on a metric unit (i.e., liters) from the pull down menu in the "Calculated Result" section of the interface, PestCalc internally converts gallons (the default unit) to liters automatically without any extra effort required on the user's part. Please see usage demo in the How To Do Rate Calc... page.

Q.  I downloaded the trial version of PestCalc for Windows. It expired after 30 days. What do I do next?

Trial software allows potential users to install and evaluate a software so they can decide for themselves whether it would be a good and efficient tool to use for their own specific purpose. After the trial period, the user may either decide to continue using the software or not use it at all. If and when a user decides to keep the software, it needs to be registered with the author or seller. On payment of the approprite license fee, the user will be emailed an activation key that would convert the trial version into a legally licensed copy with no expiration. For PestCalc for Windows, trial version can be registered by visiting http://www.agrosoftsystems.com/orderPW.html and clicking the "Buy Now" button associated with the software.

AgroKeeper for Windows

Q.  On installation and after double-clicking SetupAgroKeeper.exe, the system appeared to freeze and won't do anything.

Q.  I downloaded the demo version.  It was asking me for my UserName ("Licensed to:") and License No.?  What do I do?

The demo version was designed to start and function just like the licensed version BUT without the need to enter the UserName and License Number (aka registration info).  After installation, AgroKeeper will display a splash screen where you will be prompted for the registration info.  Just left-click on the "Cancel" button to continue with your record-keeping session.  You may use the software for 30 days without having to enter the registration info.  After the testing time has elapsed, you will need to purchase a license to use it for as long as you like.

Q.  How do I record tank mixes in AgroKeeper for Windows?

Let's use Orthene 97 and Lorsban 4E tank mix as an example.
Here's how you would enter the tank mix as an entry in the Chemical Panel:
Add tank mix information using the "Add Chemical" mode under the Chemicals Panel.

  • Product Code: Orthene 97 + Lorsban 4E
  • Product/Trade Name: Orthene 97 + Lorsban 4E
  • Application Mode: Tractor/Ground Spray
  • Product Type: Custom Tank Mix
  • EPA Numbers: Orthene 97 - 59639-91-5481/Lorsban 4E - 62719-220
  • Active Ingredient: Orthene 97: Acephate, Lorsban 4E: Chlorpyrifos
  • Application Rate: (leave blank; instead enter individual pesticide rate in the "Other Information" field under the Sprays Panel)
  • Re-entry Interval: 24 hours
  • Check box(es) of Required Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) as appropriate
Entering the information about the tank mix in the Chemicals panel puts it in the Chemicals/Pesticides database. Doing so would make it available for use under the Sprays Panel whenever you want to report its use in any spray activity. To report a pesticide application spray activity, go to the Sprays Panel of AgroKeeper and click on the "Add Spray" button. The Spray information form would display. Use the pull-down menu in the Product Code field to select "Orthene 97 + Lorsban 4E". Such selection would automatically fill in all the fields corresponding to the information you entered previously under the Chemicals Panel. Although some fields would already be filled in, you still have to provide additional information about the spray session that you performed. Enter the following information, under the Sprays Panel, whenever you want to enter a report on a spray when you use the tank mix:
  • Total Volume of Spray Mix Used: [Enter your value here]
  • Target Crop: Cotton (enter other crop species as appropriate for your specific spray session)
  • Target Pests: Armyworm, Cotton aphid, Cutworm, Thrips, Pink Bollworm
  • Signal Word: Caution
  • In the "Other Information" field of the Sprays Panel, enter the following:
  • '
    • Application Rate: Orthene 97: 1.0 lb/A; Lorsban 4E: 2 pints/A
    • Actual Amount of Chemical(s) Used: [Enter your values here for the two pesticides]
  • Also provide spray dates/times, weather and soil information as required by your state
That's it, we are done! This record-keeping session of a tank mix is much simpler and easier done in practice.

Q.  What added functionality does the latest version of AgroKeeper for Windows offer?

The new version not only has the added option to record tank mixes, both in the Chemicals and Sprays panels, but also has improved reporting features.  This new version also fixes the intermittent problem (bug) that other users had reported about AgroKeeper's failure to save newly added records AND having them printed under the same session.  This problem has not been observed if you exit the session and then have the saved records printed at a later time.  Similarly, this was not observed if records were saved to a file, read the file into a word processing program, and then printing them off it. This problem has been resolved with the release of the new version.

Q.  How do I upgrade to the latest version of AgroKeeper for Windows?
